The Ledbury Flyer is a motorcycle grasstrack racing event hosted by Ledbury MCC. If you have never seen grasstrack racing before it's a real eye-opener. The machines race around a muddy field over a fairly short course which gets more and more churned up throughout the day. The competitors range in age from kids, through teens, to adults, both male and female. There are regular bike, quadbike and sidecar races. No matter which machines are racing they are incredibly exciting to watch. As a newcomer to this type of racing, I would say that the more wheels, the more mess thrown up around the track and the guy in front has a much better chance to see what is going on compared to the chasing pack who get consumed in a sea of mud and dust. All of which add to the drama.
My favourite races were the sidecars. The contortions and athleticism of the passenger are nothing short of daredevil stuff. You will see what I mean from the photos.
Because of the lack of a hard surface and the continuous ripping up of the track, this is a fairly dangerous sport and I witnessed a couple of quite serious accidents that required an ambulance for the competitors. In fact, at one point both ambulances were occupied and racing was held up for quite some time until a third arrived.
